From Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief and Eva Marie Saint in North by Northwest, to Kim Novac in Vertigo and Tippi Hendren in The Birds, sophisticated, mysterious blonde heroines are synonymous with Alfred Hitchcock’s biggest hit movies.
Today we’re looking to the iconic director’s leading ladies in our Hitchcock Blondes wedding fashion inspiration moodboard. Whilst not a Hitchcock heroine, we couldn’t help including Claire Danes from the latest Harper’s Bazaar cover, who could easily have stepped out of a Hitchcock thriller.
“Suspense is like a woman,” he said. “The more left to the imagination, the more the excitement. The conventional big-bosomed blonde is not mysterious. And what could be more obvious than the old black velvet and pearls type? The perfect ‘woman of mystery’ is one who is blonde, subtle and Nordic.”
Hitchcock’s blondes were more than just beautiful; they were strong, mysterious and fiercely independent.
The look is poised, stylish and effortlessly sophisticated. Sharp tailoring, glamorous gowns, monochrome and expertly coiffed blonde waves are finished with a smattering of diamonds or pearls for a timeless, elegant look.
We’ve chosen Suzanne Neville’s Sanzio for this look, which features a crossed over bodice and nipped in waist reminiscent of the gown seen on Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief. Top with a cashmere cardigan draped over the shoulders and a glittering diamond necklace to finish the look in a typical Hitchcock heroine style.
